How to reach Salamanca

Salamanca is roughly 200 km to the Northwest of Madrid, and is readily accessible in a number of ways: from Madrid, Valladolid and Barcelona.

  • The main option is to fly to Madrid-Barajas International Airport in Madrid, and then reach Salamanca by bus or train.
  • It is also possible flying to Valladolid International Airport, and then reach Salamanca by bus or train.
  • Flying to Barcelona airport is also an alternative, although five hours are needed to reach Salamanca from Barcelona by train.

The easiest way to get Salamanca is via Madrid-Barajas International Airport:

MADRID - SALAMANCA

Madrid-Barajas international airport is the fourth in Europe in numbers of flights and passengers. There is a direct bus facility from the Madrid-Barajas airport (terminals 1 and 4) to Salamanca (www.avanzabus.com) that includes free Wi-Fi service. The ticket can also be bought in this web site.

Madrid-Salamanca trains departs from Chamartín train station in Madrid town. To go from the Barajas airport to the Renfe train station there are several ways:

  • 1. There is a short-distance train (Renfe, line C1) departing from terminal 4 (T4) that takes 16 minutes to get into Chamartín station. First departure is at 6:21 and last one, 23:31. The arrival platform of this short-distance (Cercanías) train used to be 100 m far from the platform of the ALVIA train, but one always walks inside the station. This is a comfortable option and to connect among terminals in Barajas airport there is a free 24h T1-T2-T3-T4 connecting bus. Its frequency between 6:30 AM and 23:30 is every 5 minutes.
  • 2. There is an underground train (Metro, line 8) departing from T4 and T2 (http://www.aena.es/es/aeropuerto-madrid-barajas/metro.html) since 6 AM till after midnight, at 1:30 AM. Line 8 connects Barajas airport with Nuevos Ministerios underground station. To get Chamartín is needed to change in Nuevos Ministerios to line 10, direction Hospital Infanta Sofía. The Chamartín Metro station is outside the Renfe train station. The whole way can take around 30-40 minutes.

Moreover, Salamanca has a regular bus service (every 30 minutes) and train services available (5 to 8 trains per day) to and from Madrid. The journey between Madrid and Salamanca takes about around two hours and a half. There is also a motorway between Madrid and Salamanca. More info: http://www.avanzabus.com 

BARCELONA - SALAMANCA

Barcelona-El Prat international airport is also reached also by a high number of international flights. The highest speed trains departs from Barcelona-Sants RENFE station to Madrid-Atocha RENFE station every 30 minutes since 5:00 AM up to 9:30 PM. They take 2:30 minutes to get Madrid.

VALLADOLID - SALAMANCA

Salamanca is 115 Km southeast of Valladolid and there is a bus service from the airport to the city centre. Regular bus and train services are available from Valladolid (city centre) to Salamanca. The journey (via motorway) between Valladolid and Salamanca takes 1.05 hours.

OTHER CONNECTIONS

Salamanca is connected to Portugal, Valladolid and Madrid via motorway. It is connected via motorway to the south of Spain (i.e. Sevilla) and the north (i.e. León, Gijón and Oviedo). There are also regular direct trains between Salamanca and the major cities of Portugal, such us Lisbon or Porto, and we are also well connected with several French Cities.
